There is a worship song that I love to listen to. The first verse of the song goes:
“God I look to You
I won’t be overwhelmed
Give me vision to see things like You do
God I look to You
You’re where my help comes from
Give me wisdom, You know just what to do…”
(-words from God I Look to You by Brian Johnson, sung by Jenn Johnson, from the album “Be lifted High”)
When I was growing up my mother used to refer to a level of understanding and practicality called, “mother wit.” It’s an old-fashioned but precious expression used by my older relatives, who were from the deep south. It is another way of saying “common sense.” Mother wit is an expression of wisdom that is performed through everyday courtesies and considerations. You know, things like treating others the way you want to be treated. Or, taking care of paying your bills before spending money on extravagances.
There is another kind of wisdom…one that supersedes any wisdom man could ever think of or live by. It is the Wisdom of God.
In Proverbs 1:7, the Amplified version of the Bible states:
“The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; but fools despise skillful and godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.”

Proverbs 4: 7 (AMP) goes on to say: “The beginning of Wisdom is: get Wisdom (skillful and godly Wisdom)! [For skillful and godly Wisdom is the principal thing.] And with all you have gotten, get understanding (discernment, comprehension, and interpretation).”
The importance of Godly wisdom for us is that without it we are always subject to our own interpretation of our life’s situations. We prioritize our life based on our sensuality, psychology and perceptions. We dream and set our goals according to our own lusts and desires. On first glance this way of living doesn’t seem at all flawed. Most of us live for years following our own mind-sets, making decisions on our own understanding and knowledge.
But to be truly free to be all we are, however, we must consult the One who created, designed and purposed us. Only the Creator can give direction to the Creation. Only He knows the true purpose for each of our lives. So as we go about deciding our own futures…being the “captains of our own fate,” we begin to discover that we cannot always rely on the accuracy of our human wisdom. It can and often does fail us. Where is our wisdom when the doctor gives no hope to a loved one? How significant is our human wisdom when disease, depression, suicide or worse things plague our generation? Does human wisdom have an answer as to how we are to live our lives in peace, love or forgiveness?
We can live for a time inside our own intellect which provides a partial understanding of life and how our circumstances affect us…but it is only in seeking the manifested Wisdom of Almighty God that we can find real understanding and direction. God’s Wisdom is the “principal thing” that we need to bring us into a life of spiritual freedom. Understanding that freedom is the condition of living free…free from fear, defeat and hopelessness.
If we lack this “principle” or higher Godly wisdom, the apostle James admonishes us to seek for and ask for God’s wisdom. God promises to give it to us in ample supply. James 1:5 (AMP) tells us “if any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or fault-finding, and it will be given him.”
I have personally found that praying for God’s Wisdom, every morning before I start my day, equips me to face my daily trials. I give my concerns, my worries to God and exchange them for His knowledge and understanding of what I must do. He has never failed to instruct me…as I continue to listen to His instruction. I encourage you to do the same thing. Let His insight strengthen your resolve to be victorious in your daily walk.
What we must begin to realize, my dear friends, sojourners in God’s truth, partners in His freedom…is the only way to true knowledge, understanding and freedom is through the Wisdom of God. Seek His Wisdom, receive His Wisdom and apply His Wisdom to your everyday life and your dreams, goals, hopes for your future will be realized. Remember…With God, ALL things are possible.
Until next post…Blessings,
