In my time with God, one of the most significant conversations we have is me asking Him why am I here? What is my purpose from His perspective?
As I deal with the issues of life, my confidence in my identity becomes clouded and my appeals for clarity from God become a pestering need for me to know and be assured of. So I am continually asking the Lord to clearly define who I am and why He created me.
I have read many scriptures that I was taught would speak to my purpose and destiny but still I have struggled with the reality of “who I am.” Even after hearing God’s heart on the matter, I get sucked back into doubt by circumstances that seem larger than my ability and thoughts that reek of fear and defeat. That’s when other people’s opinions of who I am become stronger in my mind than my Abba’s Word concerning me. Worse yet, this is when the voice of the enemy begins to make more sense to me than God’s promises.
I confess this weakness to you because I would bet that I am not alone in these restless, anxious thoughts about identity and purpose.
Jeremiah 29:11-13 is a comforting scripture to me when I am in this inner struggle. The Lord speaks to my fears and doubts in these verses. Listen:
“For I know the plans and thoughts that I have for you,’ says the LORD, ‘plans for peace and well-being and not for disaster to give you a future and a hope.’
“Then you will call on Me and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear [your voice] and I will listen to you.”
“Then [with a deep longing] you will seek Me and require Me [as a vital necessity] and [you will] find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.” (Jer. 29:11-13 AMP)
When I read these verses out loud to myself, it opens my heart up to the power of God and His ability to speak life in my dark places.
Don’t misunderstand me… I still fight battles that knock me down and cause me to doubt my abilities…but I stop for a moment and listen to the voice of our Heavenly Father to be reminded of who I am and why I am here.
As Children of God, He breathes His identity into and over us. He calls us “more than conquerors” (Romans 8:37), “the righteousness of God” (2 Cor. 5:21), “living stones” (1 Pet. 2:5), called according to “His good pleasure” (Phil. 2:13), and “causes all things to work for good for those who are called according to His plan and purpose” (Romans 8:28).
The reality of our life is that sometimes things are hard. Sometimes the answers aren’t clear and the fears of the unknown can overcome us. BUT…God’s Word is where our true reality is found. We are what He says we are…whether we believe it in those hard times or not.
Remind yourself of who you are by turning to the sound of love and compassion; the voice of the Father who loved each one of us first…Our Abba, Our Lord…Almighty God. Read His declarations of our identity out loud to yourself and renew your purpose within your heart.
We are not without hope, but bring the light of God’s love to a dark and frightened world. This is our time to stand in our identity as Children of God and draw those in darkness to His Great Light.
Until next post…be blessed.
