Free…and seen.

There is a scene in the movie, Avatar, where the two blue lovers look into each others eyes and she whispers to him, “I see you.”

Those words mean more than having sight of the other person.

Those words, spoken in just the way she speaks them to him, means-“I know who you are;  I esteem you; I acknowledge you, and because I do…I offer you my love and affection.”

Avatar love

I’ve seen Avatar a few times.  It’s a great movie.  But, I wait in anticipation for that one moment in the movie to happen.

It’s interesting to

me how watching other people express a genuine love for one another makes me feel warm and happy. (…Oh, you, too? 🙂 )  I believe it’s because we are all created to love and to be loved.

One of the most famous scriptures in the Bible is John 3:16. You know it. It says:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” (NKJ Version)

God “sees” us.

He saw us long ago and knew we would need a savior. But more than that He knew we would need an example of the kind of love He gives to us and we are to give to one another. It’s the kind of love that esteems, honors, acknowledges the other’s importance…it is an all-encompassing love that the Word of God calls, unconditional.

In I Corinthians 13: 4-8, the love chapter, the Apostle Paul pens these words to the Christians at the church of Corinth:

“4 Love endures long and is patient and kind; love never is envious nor boils over with jealousy, is not boastful or vainglorious, does not display itself haughtily.

5 It is not conceited (arrogant and inflated with pride); it is not rude (unmannerly) and does not act unbecomingly. Love (God’s love in us) does not insist on its own rights or its own way, for it is not self-seeking; it is not touchy or fretful or resentful; it takes no account of the evil done to it [it pays no attention to a suffered wrong].

6 It does not rejoice at injustice and unrighteousness, but rejoices when right and truth prevail.

7 Love bears up under anything and everything that comes, is ever ready to believe the best of every person, its hopes are fadeless under all circumstances, and it endures everything [without weakening].

8 Love never fails [never fades out or becomes obsolete or comes to an end].” (Amplified Version)

John-3-16

Often when we love someone, we expect that person to make us happy…and that’s not an unreasonable expectation.
But how do we feel about that loved one when they are struggling and can’t be there for us the way we are accustomed to?
Do we find someone else to fulfill our needs? Well, we shouldn’t, but as elementary as this sounds, it is amazing how quickly some can give up on a relationship that’s not going their way.

What if God did that to us?

Imagine being served divorce papers from the Lord, citing irreconcilable differences. God felt He wasn’t getting out of the relationship what He was putting into it. Scary thought, right?
Sidebar…this is not an editorial on divorce. I have been through divorce and would not recommend it. I am using it as an example of how devastatingly final it is.

So, back to my scenario…

Do you “see” God?
Do you esteem Him highly and prefer Him over others?
Do you honor Him and acknowledge His importance?
Do you love Him unconditionally?

If your relationship with Him is not what it can be…don’t despair. Fortunately for us we serve a God who “so loves” us that He sacrificed that most precious of all gifts, His Son, for us.
That doesn’t sound like someone who would give up on you if you had a disagreement, a disappointment or just didn’t see “eye to eye.”
His love is greater than any issue we could have with Him.
His love will and does cover, embrace, correct, lift and satisfy like no other love there is.

Next time you spend time with God…look into His eyes, and lovingly say, “I see you, too.”

Until next post, Blessings…
