What’s the longest book you’ve ever read?

In high school, we were required to read literary anthology series. One of these was the Iliad and the Odyssey. This was Homer’s epic story that has been recently produced into a movie (one of several interpretations of it brought to the big screen).

Page count on that story was about 600. It took an entire semester of my junior year to complete. The term paper we had to complete afterwards was the stuff of nightmares. I will say that I am very glad I had the opportunity to read it. It deals with almost every human struggle known and the lessons learned were actually valuable.

I recalled the story later when watching the movie, “Brother Where Art Thou” with George Clooney. At the time I first watched it, I didn’t realize it was a creative retelling of Homer’s travels until the sirens scene…where he and his companions believed one of them had been turned into a frog by one of the beguiling women. If you’ve never seen it, I recommend it. It’s artistic, funny, thought provoking with beautiful cinematography and musical score.

Now I haven’t seen the latest version, The Odyssey. But it is on my list of things to watch.
No matter how it portrays Homer’s epic story…it will be better than reading a 600 plus page anthology
…term paper notwithstanding.
