David…Why?

What’s the weirdest movie you’ve ever watched?

In one autumn of my early teens, a new and very strange movie showed up in theaters where unsuspecting viewers like me sat in anticipation of its opening. Little did I and my young teen friends know what we were about to witness.

It started with black and white imagery and a creepy, trippy atmosphere. As I watched, I realized this wasn’t just a set up to the story…it was the story. The main character was very disturbing, as well. He had big, fuzzy hair that sat high on his head as if he had stuck his finger in a light socket. He wore an oddly fitted suit and had a peculiar gaze on his face that made you think he was perpetually anxious and overstimulated. He had a strange little wife and an even stranger “baby” (iykyk.)…and then there was the dinner chicken.

The movie was David Lynch’s Eraserhead.

Since that first viewing, I have sat through this movie 3 more times.

Why, you ask?

Because I just wanted to make it make sense…and it never really has. At least not to me. But then, David Lynch’s cinematic genius was often misunderstood and terrifying, if I’m honest. So Eraserhead is one of those movie experiences that fascinates and confuses me but makes me wonder…why David?…why?
